Hey y'all! Yea, yea, so I didn't post on Friday. My mind hasn't been in the right frame lately. I apologize! Anyway...this is one of my most frequently asked questions, "How do you make your own detergent?" So, for this very late frugal Friday I will tell you all!
The list of ingredients:
1 bar of fels naptha laundry soap
1 cup borax
1 cup arm & hammer super washing soda (NOT baking soda)
*OK, first of all, the ingredients can all be found in the detergent aisle of your local store. I get mine at Publix. The powdered detergent should be stored in a plastic container with a lid. I "re-purpose" a 1 gallon ice cream bucket, but you can use what you want. Chop up the bar of fels naptha and add it to your food processor (if you do not have a food processor you can grate the soap using a cheese grater). Pulse until chopped up then add the borax and washing soda. At this point you could add 1/2 cup oxi-clean. I choose not to because I don't want the extra cost. Pulse these ingredients until mixed well. Store in plastic container and use 1-2 tablspoons per load, depending on size. Here's what I do...I multiply this recipe by 4 using 2 bars of fels naptha, 1 bar Ivory soap, adn 1 bar bath soap (we use Irish Spring or Lever 2000). This detergent not only smells and works great, it is better for the environment, uses less packaging, and costs less-Gain or Tide can be as much as $0.50 per load and this detergent can be as little as $0.07 per load. Next week...a recipe for homemade fabric softener! Happy frugaling!
